A 95-year-old woman, Galina Smirnova, has been charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon for allegedly beating her roommate, 89-year-old Holocaust survivor Nina Kraktsov, to death at Seagate Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre in Brooklyn, New York. Smirnova pleaded not guilty.
On a Sunday, nursing home staff discovered Kraktsov unresponsive in her bed with visible injuries. Witnesses reported seeing Smirnova washing her hands in blood before the police arrived. Kraktsov had suffered severe trauma and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Kraktsov, who survived the Holocaust, had recently been receiving care at the facility due to health complications following a stroke. Smirnova, reportedly a dementia patient who had just been placed in the same room as Kraktsov due to their shared language, had only been at the nursing home for 48 hours.
Video evidence indicated no one entered or exited the room during the time surrounding the incident, apart from medical personnel. Smirnova was arrested and remanded without bail following her court appearance. The nursing home has not commented publicly on the incident, and Kraktsov’s family expressed frustration over their lack of communication following the tragedy.
