In Charlotte, NC, 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska was fatally stabbed by Decarlos Brown on August 22 while riding the light rail. Brown has been charged with first-degree murder; the incident occurred without prior interaction between the two. Surveillance footage shows Brown stabbing Zarutska multiple times before fleeing the train.
Her death has sparked concerns over public safety in the city’s transportation system and raised questions about Brown’s mental health, as he has a history of legal issues and mental health assessments. Charlotte Mayor Vililes expressed deep sorrow over the incident and emphasized the need for enhanced safety measures.
In response to the attack, CATS (Charlotte Area Transit System) is increasing patrols along the blue line and reviewing safety protocols, including plans to upgrade surveillance cameras and improve partnerships with local mental health services. Brown has been barred from CATS properties and has previous convictions for various offenses, including weapon-related crimes.
