Several members of the Alikippa Middle School football team were injured in a bus crash on Saturday while en route to a game against Pine Richland High School. The bus, carrying 28 individuals (25 children, a driver, and two adults), crashed during a turn, striking a hillside and causing a utility pole to fall. Local authorities reported that at least 21 children and the driver were hospitalized, with one child in critical condition after surgery. A total of 20 child patients were admitted to UPMC Children’s Hospital, and all but one were discharged.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. In response, Alikippa School District announced the cancellation of all middle school football practices and games for the following week. A community meeting will address concerns. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his condolences and support for affected families, highlighting the close-knit nature of the Alikippa community. Mental health resources will be available for students and staff starting Monday.
