Long Island’s ocean beaches have reopened for swimmers as Hurricane Erin moves further from the east coast. Cupsawg Beach County Park and Smith Point in Shirley are now open, while the outer beaches remain closed. Limited swimming is also allowed at state parks, including Jones Beach and restricted knee-level wading at Robert Moses State Park due to strong currents.
Authorities are emphasizing safety during this reopening, particularly concerning rip currents created by recent storm conditions. Swimming is still closed at Hither Hills State Park and East Hampton beaches due to dangerous waves.
Despite rough waters, the weather is temperate, with late 70s temperatures anticipated. Officials urge beachgoers to stay vigilant, swim near lifeguards, and heed flag warnings. The forecast suggests favorable weather conditions will continue, with a potential shower later in the weekend.
