The FBI has issued a warning about a new type of “brushing” scam targeting smartphone users. Traditionally, brushing scams involve vendors sending unsolicited items to generate fake reviews using recipients’ information. However, this new variant involves sending packages with QR codes designed to steal personal data and download malicious software.
Victims who scan these QR codes may unknowingly provide sensitive information, including credit card details and access to bank accounts. The scammers exploit the curiosity of individuals receiving unexpected packages that lack sender information.
To protect against this scam, the FBI advises being cautious with unsolicited items, changing account profiles if you suspect fraud, and monitoring credit reports for unusual activities. Users can report suspicious activities through the FBI’s IC3 portal.
