OpenAI CEO Sam Altman discussed the future of ChatGPT during a dinner conversation, expressing confidence that it will eventually surpass the total number of conversations held by all humans combined. He mentioned that billions of people will engage with ChatGPT, emphasizing that a single model’s character and style may not cater to all users. This comment came after the launch of GPT-5, which had mixed receptions regarding its friendly personality and saw OpenAI temporarily restrict access to GPT-4 before reversing that decision following user backlash.
Altman acknowledged the rapid growth of ChatGPT since its announcement in November 2022, highlighting its ability to mimic human communication. He admitted that the company underestimated how changes in GPT-5’s tone would impact user perceptions and affirmed plans for increased customization to accommodate diverse use cases.
Regarding the potential for an AI bubble, Altman agreed but asserted that does not diminish the technology’s transformative nature. He anticipates substantial investments in data centers, projecting OpenAI’s valuation could soar to $500 billion following potential stock sales. While he recognizes that some investors may face losses, he believes the overall impact of AI will be a significant win for the economy.
