Several Arab nations expressed disappointment after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu affirmed his connection to the vision of “Greater Israel” in a recent interview. This concept refers to an expanded Israel, encompassing territories like Jordan, Lebanon, and parts of Syria and Egypt, often linked to biblical borders.
Following Netanyahu’s remarks, countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, and Egypt condemned the statements, labeling them provocative and threatening to regional stability. Jordan’s Foreign Ministry called the remarks a “dangerous escalation,” while Egypt’s Ministry urged for clarification from Israel, emphasizing the need for peace. Qatar and Saudi Arabia echoed these sentiments, condemning the expansionist nature of such claims.
The Arab League and Palestinian authorities also joined in the backlash, criticizing Netanyahu’s comments as a violation of Arab sovereignty and a dangerous provocation. They emphasized a commitment to international law and the establishment of a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders.
The support for the “Greater Israel” vision remains limited among mainstream Israelis, but far-right elements within Netanyahu’s coalition have amplified its visibility, raising concerns of exacerbating regional tensions.
