In Oklahoma, federal judge Lesson Eugene Johnson, 54, was convicted on six felony counts for violating animal welfare laws by running a dog-fighting operation. He owned “Mal Cant Kennels,” where he bred dogs for fighting, profiting from the cruel industry. Following his conviction, Johnson surrendered 190 dogs, the largest number seized from an individual in a federal dog combat case. The U.S. government is pursuing the dogs’ confiscation through an asset program. Attorney General Pamela Bondy emphasized the Department of Justice’s commitment to protecting animals, while FBI Director Kash Patel affirmed that the agency will hold accountable those involved in animal fighting. Johnson, previously convicted of similar offenses in 2004, faces up to five years in prison and fines of $250,000 per count. The case was investigated by the FBI’s New Orleans Field Office and prosecuted by U.S. Attorneys for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.
