A shooting at a University of New Mexico dorm on Friday resulted in one death and another injury. The Central Albuquerque campus was closed as authorities searched for the suspect, who was still at large by late afternoon. The incident, which occurred during a student orientation for new freshmen, prompted a shelter-in-place order while parts of the campus were evacuated.
Campus police found two people with gunshot wounds early in the morning, and a subsequent alert was sent out around 6 AM for an evacuation. One student reported hearing gunshots and seeing an injured person hiding nearby.
The university, with around 23,000 students, is grappling with rising violence in Albuquerque, particularly among juveniles. Local officials, including District Attorney Sam Bregman, are urging state lawmakers to convene a special legislative session to address ongoing crime issues.
