NASA scientists have detected mysterious radio signals beneath the Antarctic ice, prompting a reconsideration of established physics. The signals, identified by the Antarctic impulsive transient antennae (ANITA) project, seem to contradict traditional theories suggesting that signals from such depths should be absorbed. Initially thought to originate from neutrinos, further analysis ruled this out, leading to speculation about unknown particles or forces.
Conducted between 2006 and 2016, ANITA used high-altitude balloons to study space particles in Antarctica’s vast, pristine ice fields, known for their potential to detect high-energy particles. The unexpected signals indicate the need to revisit fundamental physics principles and have sparked plans for advanced experiments, like the payload of ultra-high energy observations (PUEO), aimed at clarifying their origins.
