Pop Mart, a Chinese toy company, anticipates a 350% increase in earnings in the first half of the year, primarily driven by the success of the Labubu toy line. This follows a trend where certain toys, like Cabbage Patch Kids and Beanie Babies, have captivated consumers over the years.
Cabbage Patch Kids, launched in the 1980s, sold over 90 million dolls and remains popular, while Beanie Babies gained traction in the 1990s as collectible items, leading to significant financial success for their creator, Ty Warner. Other notable toys mentioned include Bandai’s Egg Pets, which encouraged virtual pet care, and fidget spinners, which became a fad in 2017, largely due to social media.
Labubu, created by artist Kasing Lung in 2015, gained immense popularity after Pop Mart began selling figurines and stuffed toys in 2023. With endorsements from celebrities, the Labubu line has significantly boosted Pop Mart’s revenues, which soared 1,200% in 2024, showing how certain toys resonate deeply with consumers.
