A tragic incident occurred on Lake Tahoe, where a sudden storm caused a boat to capsize, resulting in the deaths of eight people, including 37-year-old Doordash executive Josh Pickles and his mother, Paula Bodinovich. The group had gathered to celebrate Bodinovich’s 71st birthday.
The disaster struck when winds quickly escalated from 5-10 mph to 35-45 mph, creating dangerous waves. A total of ten people were on the 27-foot powerboat, and when it capsized, only two were rescued initially, while six were later confirmed dead. The search over the next two days found the remaining victims, all of whom were friends and family from California and New York.
Josh Pickles, who led global strategic procurement at Doordash, is remembered for his inspirational spirit. The company expressed its deep sorrow over his loss. His wife, Jordan Sugar-Carlsgaard, who recently welcomed their baby, was not on the boat. Authorities are still investigating the incident, and water temperatures were reported to be below 60 degrees, increasing risks of hypothermia for anyone in the water for extended periods.
