Google recently offered voluntary acquisition programs to certain U.S. employees, specifically targeting members of its core teams, marketing, research, knowledge and information, and communications departments. This move comes amid an expansion of the company’s return-to-office (RTO) policy, which now mandates some employees living within 50 miles of the office to work on a hybrid schedule—three days in the office and two days remote.
In a statement, Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini noted that the initiative aims to enhance collaboration and work effectiveness, particularly as AI reshapes the industry. Earlier this year, the company laid off about 12,000 employees (6% of its workforce) to streamline operations, with additional layoffs in 2024.
Google’s Senior Vice President, Jen Fitzpatrick, emphasized that while these programs are not intended to reduce core staff numbers, they seek to foster internal mobility and new growth opportunities. The details of the acquisition offer and its potential impacts are not yet clear.
