The Ozark Mountains are currently the focus of a search for Grant Hardin, a former police chief known as the “Ozark Devil,” who escaped from Calico Rock Prison. Authorities, including local, state, and federal agencies, believe he remains in the area due to the rugged terrain, which features numerous caves and abandoned structures. The search effort is extensive, employing dogs, drones, and helicopters to navigate this cave-dense region.
Hardin has a troubled history in law enforcement and was sentenced to 30 years for the 2017 murder of 59-year-old James Appleton. He also has previous convictions for rape dating back to 1997. The circumstances of his escape raised concerns, as it took officials approximately 30 minutes to realize he was gone after a prison officer mistakenly allowed him to leave without proper identification checks.
With around 2,000 documented caves in northern Arkansas, experts warn that finding Hardin may be particularly challenging, as he could potentially survive hidden underground for an extended time. Residents have been urged to secure their homes and report any suspicious activity during the ongoing search.
