Negotiations have resumed between New Jersey Transit and the railroad engineer union to prevent a strike that could start at midnight on Friday. Union members, asserting their need for fair wages, gathered outside NJ Transit HQ, highlighting the importance of their roles in safely transporting commuters. Currently, negotiations center on wages, with the union advocating for salaries averaging $170,000 while NJ Transit disputes this, claiming an average of $135,000.
If a strike occurs, it would be the first of its kind in over 40 years, impacting about 350,000 daily commuters between New Jersey and New York City. NJ Transit plans to boost bus services but warns that these alternatives cannot accommodate the same passenger volume. Commuters are advised to prepare for disruptions, including service cancellations for a Shakira concert due to transportation limitations and upcoming events. Upcoming bus and shuttle services will be adjusted in response to potential strikes, and commuters are encouraged to work from home when possible.
