As the May 7 deadline for obtaining a Real ID approaches, many New Jersey residents are struggling to secure appointments for new documents. The New Jersey Department of Motor Vehicles (NJDMV) reported no available appointments for Real IDs, although there are numerous options for non-driver IDs and other license transactions. Given the high demand for Real IDs amidst upcoming federal enforcement, the NJDMV has introduced additional weekly appointments to help accommodate residents.
As of now, over 1.3 million compliant licenses and IDs have been issued in New Jersey. Without a Real ID or valid passport, residents may face challenges boarding domestic flights or entering federal buildings, prompting some to seek assistance from AAA branches, which may offer Real ID services in select states, albeit not in New Jersey. Social media users have taken to platforms to express frustrations over the lack of available appointments, with many stating that they have been unable to find booking options for months. The situation remains urgent as the deadline looms.
