At the ninth annual European Commission meeting focused on Syria, His Highness Aga Khan V announced a commitment of at least 100 million euros over two years from the Ismaili Imamat and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) to support Syria’s urgent humanitarian and development needs. This announcement marks his first public statement since taking office as the 50th Genetic Imam of Shia Ismaili Muslims. The conference aimed at fostering international support for Syria’s multifaceted recovery, emphasizing humanitarian, recovery, and reconstruction efforts.
Aga Khan V highlighted the importance of addressing food insecurity, healthcare, education, and preserving Syria’s cultural heritage while calling for an end to violence and a commitment to peace among all parties. The conference, co-hosted by several EU officials and attended by representatives from the Syrian interim government and international organizations, built upon discussions from the Paris Conference on Syria held earlier in February 2025.
AKDN, which has been active in Syria’s development for over 25 years, shifted its focus in 2012 to crisis response, reaching millions affected by ongoing humanitarian issues exacerbated by economic collapse and civil strife. The organization has been providing essential services such as healthcare, food assistance, and educational support, with a goal of rebuilding resilience and social cohesion in Syrian communities.
As the situation in Syria remains critical, the need for comprehensive support and recovery initiatives is vital to help rebuild the country in alignment with the aspirations of all Syrians.
