Google is exploring new experimental features in its “AI Mode,” which is inspired by popular services like Perplexity AI and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Announced on Wednesday, this mode allows users to ask multipart questions and conduct follow-ups. Currently being tested by one Google Premium subscriber through the Search Lab, AI Mode utilizes a custom version of Gemini 2.0, providing detailed comparisons and information on complex queries.
For instance, users can inquire about differences in sleep tracking across various devices, and AI Mode can provide comprehensive answers along with related articles. This feature uses a “query fan-out” technique to issue multiple related searches simultaneously, resulting in clear and concise responses.
Robby Stein, Google Search’s VP of Product, highlighted that users tend to ask longer questions and more frequent follow-ups compared to traditional search methods. As an early experiment, Google plans to continually improve AI Mode, focusing on more visual data representation and determining when to add hyperlinks within responses.
Access to AI Mode is available for Google One AI Premium Subscribers through the Search Lab or directly via google.com/aimode. The latest updates also include the launch of Gemini 2.0, introducing AI overviews for complex tasks like coding and advanced mathematics, which can now be accessed without signing in and will also be available to teenagers.
