Interim President Henry Bienen has announced that Eric Luiten, currently vice dean for research and doctoral education at Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering, will become the next president of the university. Luiten will collaborate with Provost Kathleen Hagerty over the next few months before officially taking on the role, following Hagerty’s announcement of his impending departure after six years as president.
With over a decade in academic leadership at Northwestern, Luiten is recognized for his contributions in research and interdisciplinary collaborations, including partnerships with the Arts and Sciences Research Center and the Northwestern Prison Education Program.
Bienen praised Luiten as a distinguished scientist, articulating his qualifications and commitment to academic excellence and interdisciplinary research. Luiten expressed honor in his new role, emphasizing his dedication to enhancing Northwestern’s national and global presence in higher education and research.
Francesca Cornelli, dean of the Kellogg School of Management and chair of the search committee, noted Luiten’s passion for the institution and commitment to excellence as key factors in his selection. Luiten’s extensive background includes leadership in various academic programs and recognition as a Fellow of several prestigious organizations.
He is also a family man, living in Evanston with his fiancée, Dima Awad, and their blended family. Luiten is committed to advancing Northwestern’s educational mission while ensuring a smooth transition in leadership alongside current Provost Hagerty.
