A tragic incident occurred on Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Dream when a 5-year-old girl fell from Deck 4 after being encouraged by her mother to climb into an open porthole. The incident happened on June 29 while the ship was between the Bahamas and Fort Lauderdale.
The girl lost her balance and fell 49 feet into the ocean. Her father, unaware of the event, jumped in to rescue her after hearing his wife’s screams. Both were rescued by Disney’s emergency crew shortly after. The girl suffered mild hypothermia and lactic acidosis but was otherwise uninjured, while the father sustained hypothermia and vertebral fractures.
Broward Assistant State’s Attorney decided not to charge the mother with child neglect, citing the incident as an isolated lapse in judgment. The girl, who had swimming lessons but could not swim, was too small to trigger the ship’s safety sensors. Disney praised their crew’s quick action during the rescue.
