As summer travel approaches, passengers are facing rising baggage and ticket prices, along with fewer flight options due to high jet fuel costs influenced by the ongoing conflict in Iran. Jet fuel prices have surged to an average of $209 per barrel, a significant increase from approximately $99 in February. This has led airlines, including Alaska Airlines, Delta, United, and American, to raise checked baggage fees and introduce new ticket fees for seat selection and refunds.
Travelers, like Mary Kropp and Wendy Goodrich, are reconsidering their travel plans due to these increased costs. Economists warn that as long as the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, airlines will continue to face high jet fuel prices, which will likely keep fares elevated. Nick Huntington Klein, an associate professor of economics, emphasized that airlines may retain high prices unless they see a drop in demand.
In addition, travelers are experiencing rising fuel costs for other modes of transportation, such as RVs. Overall, many anticipate cutting back on air travel this summer, despite the lack of relief in pricing.
