A growing number of lawmakers from both parties are urging California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell to resign following allegations of inappropriate behavior, sexual assault, and rape. Swalwell, who is also running for governor, denies the charges, but bipartisan pressure is mounting for his ousting. Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna announced plans to combine the resolution to expel Swalwell with one targeting disgraced Republican Tony Gonzalez, who admitted to an affair and subsequently committed suicide.
Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna called Swalwell’s alleged actions “disgusting” and stated that consequences are necessary. He indicated openness to voting for Swalwell’s expulsion if combined with other cases. Similarly, Republican Rep. Byron Donald decried the allegations, affirming that both Swalwell and Gonzalez should be removed for undermining Congress’s integrity.
Other lawmakers, including Reps. Pramila Jayapal, Eugene Vindman, and Jared Huffman, have also demanded Swalwell resign. At least four women have accused him of sexual misconduct, with one claiming he raped her when she was incapacitated. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office is currently investigating these allegations. Swalwell has called the claims “absolutely false” and described them as a private matter with his wife, while his attorney has threatened to sue one of the accusers.
