A coastal Florida town is facing chaos as social media is being used to orchestrate “takeovers” of gatherings by spring break mobs, leading to violence and mass arrests. Daytona Beach has recently closed its beach after incidents involving shootings and large crowds of students running for safety.
In a single takeover, 133 arrests were made, prompting authorities to impose stricter fines and limit gathering sizes. Sheriff Tommy Ford remarked that the communities welcoming young crowds have become problematic.
Previously known for wild beach parties, areas like Panama City Beach have had to crack down on underage drinking and misconduct, including bans on alcohol and curfews. Despite these measures, unruly behavior continues, with parties getting out of control, leading law enforcement to employ paintball guns and pepper spray against crowds.
Law enforcement agencies are now monitoring social media to prevent these incidents. The chaos has prompted officials to alert parents in Atlanta about upcoming spring break gatherings, indicating the challenges of managing large, spontaneous crowds of young people at the beaches.
