The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) announced overnight closures starting Thursday for repairs to a bridge joint at the interchange from Interstate 35 to Route 290 East in Austin. The closure follows a viral post on February 14, showing a noticeable gap in the bridge joint, which raised concerns about the structure’s integrity. TxDOT has stated that while the viaduct is structurally sound and has been monitored for years, the gap is normal due to design specifications that allow for expansion and contraction.
Repairs will involve nightly closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weekdays for several weeks, with detours in place for drivers. The repairs come after increased public attention due to videos of vehicles passing through the gap, which sparked safety concerns. TxDOT clarified that a metal plate was previously installed to address the issue and assured that the repairs were planned prior to the viral post, which merely accelerated public awareness. A local resident who initiated the online discussion expressed relief that the repairs were finally being made, emphasizing the importance of reporting safety issues.
