Commuters faced significant delays on various MBTA commuter rail and subway lines due to equipment issues, primarily linked to severe winter weather. Many trains were canceled, with Keolis, the operator, citing a “lack of equipment” due to increased maintenance needs for passenger cars.
Riders reported being hours late for work due to these cancellations. The MBTA noted a reduction in cancellations by 44% from Tuesday to Wednesday and 47% from Wednesday to Thursday, indicating improvements in service.
The Orange and Blue Lines experienced “signal problems,” while older trains on the Red Line struggled in the cold, prompting the MBTA to plan shorter trains to alleviate congestion. Although delays decreased to 15-20 minutes on the Red Line, riders still reported overcrowding.
The MBTA expressed appreciation for its employees’ hard work during these conditions and advised riders to expect reduced parking availability due to ongoing snow removal operations. No timeline for returning to normal service was provided.
