During the Rising Tide protests, activists successfully blocked three coal ships from entering Newcastle Port over the weekend. The protests, part of an annual climate event at the world’s largest coal port, drew thousands of participants and included demonstrations on land and in the water. Greenpeace reported that three activists attached themselves to a ship’s anchor chain, unfurling a banner that read “Phase out coal and gas.”
Dr. Ellen O’Donnell, a participant and Greenpeace activist, emphasized the urgency of climate action, citing Australia’s significant role as a fossil fuel exporter. Throughout the weekend, protesters faced arrests for breaching a restricted area established by the NSW government, leading to charges against multiple individuals.
The NSW Ports Authority confirmed that transport operations were maintained in coordination with police, while Rising Tide and Greenpeace criticized the Albanon government for continuing to approve new fossil fuel projects despite international climate commitments. Rising Tide is calling for a halt on new fossil fuel developments and an abolition of coal exports by 2030.
