The recent government shutdown in the U.S. has ended, but its effects on travel persist, causing unease among travelers. A survey by The Points Guy, conducted by YouGov, revealed significant concerns about flying: 48% of Americans reported being “very” or “somewhat” worried about travel safety due to the shutdown and resultant air traffic controller shortages.
Among those planning holiday travel, 41% of Thanksgiving travelers and 40% of Christmas travelers indicated they had to cancel, reschedule, or adjust their plans because of these disruptions. Specifically, 18% canceled Thanksgiving trips, and almost 19% did the same for Christmas, while others opted to change modes of transportation, such as driving or taking the train.
Despite the shutdown concluding, the fallout may still influence travel decisions as the busy holiday season approaches. The survey highlights continuing public anxiety about air travel safety, marking a notable impact on the upcoming holiday travel landscape.
