Valve has announced a new console, the Steam Machine, aimed at competing with major players like Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation. This home console, which allows gamers to play PC games on a TV, serves as both a gaming device and a computer. It’s a successor to the original Steam Machine from 2014, which struggled in the market. Pricing for the new model, expected in early 2026, has not yet been revealed.
The Steam Machine will run on a Linux-based SteamOS and employ AMD graphics, supporting 4K resolution and 60 fps. Valve describes it as an optimized gaming PC, designed for ease of use with its extensive digital storefront. Analysts suggest that its appeal may largely be to existing Steam users who prefer a living room gaming experience.
Additionally, Valve unveiled the Steam Frame, a wireless VR headset that integrates elements of gaming PC functionality. This headset aims to enhance VR experiences with advanced graphics technology.
Industry experts assert that Valve’s move reflects an understanding of evolving gaming trends, particularly as Sony and Microsoft shift towards more flexible gaming offerings, suggesting a promising opportunity for hybrid devices in the market.
