A 19-year-old man from Kent, Washington, named Saeed Ali Mireh, has been arrested by the FBI in connection with a foiled terrorist plot in Michigan, marking the eighth arrest related to a planned attack over Halloween weekend. Mireh and his co-conspirator, Thomas Kern Jimenez Gusell, face charges for conspiring to support ISIS. They allegedly were in contact with seven others involved in the plot, which includes five individuals accused of scouting locations for attacks in Detroit, such as gay bars and amusement parks.
The investigation revealed a broader network, with at least six co-conspirators in the UK and Sweden. The charges stem from a series of communications among the conspirators, indicating plans to travel to Turkey to join ISIS. Jimenez Gusell was apprehended while trying to fly to Turkey, having expressed urgency in leaving to evade federal authorities.
Both Mireh and Jimenez Gusell have a history of counterterrorism scrutiny, with Mireh previously investigated in 2023 for discussions about attacks. The FBI’s findings indicate ongoing communications with known ISIS supporters, raising serious concerns about the group’s intentions. The deputy commissioner for intelligence and counterterrorism emphasized the increasing coordination of such plots, indicating a shift from digital planning to physical action.
