Tesla is facing a lawsuit from the parents of a teenager who died in a crash involving a Cybertruck last November in Piedmont, California. The crash, which occurred on November 27, 2024, involved four passengers who hit a tree and caught fire; only one person survived. The lawsuit claims that the design of the Cybertruck’s electric door handles trapped the victims inside during the fire, making it impossible for them to escape.
The suit argues that the door handles provide no functional manual override, complicating rescue efforts from both the inside and outside. The plaintiffs, Carl and Noel Tsukahara, allege their daughter, Christa Tsukahara, died from smoke inhalation and burns despite being alive immediately after the crash. The lawsuit also points out that Tesla has previously been warned about the risks associated with its electronic door systems.
Additionally, the family is suing the driver of the Cybertruck, Soren Dixon, who was under the influence at the time of the accident and also died in the crash. The lawsuit highlights concerns over vehicle safety, particularly as Tesla has faced scrutiny and multiple recalls since the Cybertruck’s launch, while also noting that Tesla’s vehicles have received high safety ratings in crash tests.
