In a recent escalation in Yemen, Iran-backed Houthis attacked the offices of UN agencies, detaining 11 employees in Sanaa, the Houthi-controlled capital. This assault targeted the World Food Program, World Health Organization, and UNICEF, with security forces storming the offices and interrogating staff. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the incident and called for the immediate release of detained personnel.

The attack reflects a pattern of repression against international organizations in Houthi regions, as they have detained numerous UN staff and associated individuals in the past. This incident follows a significant Israeli airstrike that killed Houthi Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahawi and several cabinet members, intensifying the conflict.

UN envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg voiced concerns about the regional implications of these events, emphasizing that Yemen should not be a battlefield for broader geopolitical conflicts. The Houthis have vowed to escalate their military actions against Israel, including launching missiles and targeting merchant ships in the Red Sea, in response to recent events.
