B2U Storage Solutions, a California-based company, is set to repurpose 500 electric car batteries in Bexar County, Texas, converting them into energy storage for the local electric grid. The facility will allow for charging these batteries during periods of excess renewable energy, with a total capacity of 24 megawatt hours, sufficient to power approximately 3,330 homes daily. The company plans to initiate three additional storage projects in Texas, aiming for a total of 100 megawatt hours across the state.
B2U’s approach takes advantage of retired EV batteries, extending their usefulness after initial vehicle life, particularly for renewable energy storage. The company has operated similar projects in California, utilizing batteries from models like Nissan Leaf and Tesla. With the global electric vehicle fleet nearing 58 million, the second life battery market is expected to grow significantly, projected to reach $4.2 billion by 2035.
B2U’s technology enables the effective use of batteries at different health levels, enhancing grid reliability and aiding in energy cost management. As the demand for sustainable solutions rises, the company’s initiative highlights the potential of reused batteries in preventing waste and conserving valuable minerals.
