Seattle is facing significant traffic challenges due to a month-long lane closure on northbound I-5, starting July 18. All lanes will be closed from Friday night to Monday, affecting commuters and traffic flow across the region. The closure aims to replace concrete on the Ship Canal Bridge, a critical part of the Revive I-5 project.
The Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has stated that this is necessary, despite acknowledging that closures will cause substantial backups. While express lanes will remain open, the closures will likely impact both north and southbound traffic, particularly during busy morning commutes. Local events, including Sea Fair and a Seahawks preseason game, may exacerbate traffic issues.
WSDOT advises commuters to consider alternative transportation options, such as light rail or carpooling, and to anticipate longer travel times throughout this period.
