Buffalo, NY (WKBW) – The city of Buffalo is initiating the acquisition of the Buffalo Grand Hotel, downtown’s largest hotel, due to its long-standing vacancy and numerous code violations. Acting Mayor Chris Scanlon announced the action, highlighting the hotel’s 18 code violations and over $89,000 in unpaid taxes and sewer charges, which pose safety concerns.
Using Section 19-B, a law from 2022 aimed at addressing abandoned properties, the city began the process with a waiver placed on the hotel’s door. City officials, including lawyer Cavet Chambers, emphasized this as a crucial tool to combat abandoned properties. However, frustration was voiced over the lack of progress from the hotel’s owner, Harry Stinson, who claimed he was still working on restoring the hotel despite the city’s actions.
The hotel has been closed since a fire labeled as arson. Stinson pointed to the fire’s aftermath and the COVID-19 pandemic as significant obstacles. He has 30 days to comply with city regulations under Article 19 before the city moves to seize the property for redevelopment.
Economically, the hotel’s closure has impacted Buffalo, with local tourism officials noting the loss of potential business opportunities. Stinson remains optimistic about securing funding to reopen the hotel by fall, while city officials are increasingly pressured to find solutions for the property’s future.
