William F. Tate IV has been appointed as the 22nd president of Rutgers University, effective July 1. This decision was made during a joint meeting of the Rutgers board, which also named him a university professor. He succeeds Jonathan Holloway, who served for five years.
Tate is currently the president of the Louisiana State University (LSU) system, where he leads over 55,000 students across multiple campuses, including 12,000 graduate students. He brings significant experience from previous roles, including serving as executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of South Carolina and as dean at Washington University in St. Louis.
The search for Rutgers’ new president emphasized the need for a transformative leader aligned with the university’s values. Board chair Amy L. Towers expressed confidence in Tate’s vision and leadership capabilities.
Tate holds a Bachelor’s in Economics and a PhD in Mathematics Science Education. He has been recognized with various honors and is involved with several prestigious academic organizations. His selection was the result of a thorough process by a committee representing various Rutgers constituencies.
