Six Flags America and Hurricane Port in Prince George County, Maryland, will close in November as part of Six Flags’ long-term growth strategy. The park’s last operational day will be November 2, 2023, following its opening on April 21. Six Flags emphasized that eligible employees will receive retirement and benefits.
CEO Richard Zimmerman described the decision as challenging and acknowledged the parks’ significance to the community. The company opted to market the 500 acres of property for redevelopment, which they believe will yield better financial returns.
Local officials, including Prince George’s County Executive Tara Jackson, expressed disappointment over the closure, highlighting the park’s role in the community and its economic impact. Councilman Walla Bregay noted the decision took them by surprise and emphasized the need for a redevelopment plan that benefits residents. The closure comes as the area faces other economic challenges, including job losses and declining home sales.
