Katherine Terrell reports that Kellen Moore, the recently crowned Super Bowl champion offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles, has agreed to become the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. The announcement came shortly after the Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX, with quarterback Jalen Hurts named MVP. Although Eagles coach Nick Sirianni humorously encouraged Moore to stay for another season, Moore, 36, is pursuing his coaching ambitions. Under his leadership, the Eagles had an impressive season, averaging 27.2 points per game in the regular season and 36.3 points per game in the playoffs.
The Saints had the last remaining head coaching vacancy in the NFL, having waited to finalize Moore’s hiring until after the Super Bowl due to league rules. They conducted interviews with several candidates, including Mike Kafka, Anthony Weaver, and Darren Rizzi, before ultimately selecting Moore. His appointment marks a shift for the Saints, as he becomes the first head coach from outside the organization since Sean Payton’s departure after the 2021 season. Unlike the older Allen, whom he replaces, Moore is one of the youngest head coaches in the league and brings an offensive focus similar to Payton’s approach. Moore has a background as a quarterback in the NFL and began his coaching career after retiring in 2017.
