Astronomers have confirmed the discovery of an interstellar object, labeled 3i/Atlas, which is likely the largest of its kind detected. Classified as a comet, it appears to be primarily ice rather than rock. The object poses no threat to Earth, as it passes within Mars’ orbit. Initially referred to as A11PL3Z, it was discovered by a NASA-funded survey in Hawaii.
This marks only the third known detection of an interstellar visitor, the first two being ‘Oumuamua in 2017 and 2i/Borisov in 2019. The new object is estimated to be around 10-20 km wide and may become more visible until late October.
Scientists believe there could be around 10,000 interstellar objects moving through our solar system, many yet to be detected. The discovery offers a unique opportunity for research, particularly in understanding the potential for life beyond our solar system.
