An 88-year-old Holocaust survivor, Barbara Steinmetz, recently spoke out following a shocking attack in Boulder, Colorado, where a man used a “make-up flamethrower” during a demonstration for the return of Israeli hostages. In her first public comments since the incident, Steinmetz emphasized that the attack had “nothing to do with the Holocaust” and expressed concern about the state of America, urging kindness, decency, and respect among people.
Steinmetz, who suffered minor burns, was part of a group attacked by Mohamed Sabri Soliman, who also threw Molotov cocktails. This assault occurred shortly after two Israeli embassy workers were killed in Washington, where the attackers similarly shouted “free Palestine.”
Rabbi Marc Soloway, from Steinmetz’s congregation, noted that several members were injured, with two hospitalized. He condemned Soliman’s actions, describing them as “delusional and misguided,” stating that violence is not the solution to the suffering in Gaza.
Steinmetz shared her harrowing history as a Jewish refugee during World War II, recalling her family’s flight through Europe before eventually settling in the U.S. She moved to Boulder around the mid-2000s. Soloway expressed concern for the trauma experienced by a Holocaust survivor faced with such violence again, highlighting the deep scars of history that endure.
