Rocket Lab USA, Inc. has been chosen by the US Space Force to compete for the Department of Defense’s National Security Space Launch (NSSL) phase 3 lane 1 program, which involves a contract worth up to $5.6 billion until June 2029. The company is developing the Neutron rocket, a reusable medium-lift launch vehicle capable of deploying payloads up to 13,000 kg, aimed at fulfilling national security mission requirements and supporting satellite deployments. The Neutron’s inaugural launch is planned for the second half of 2025 from Launch Complex 3 in Virginia.
Rocket Lab is one of five providers selected for the NSSL program, which mandates strict criteria to ensure a reliable domestic launch base for critical government missions. The program expects to award a minimum of 30 missions during the contract period, with potential extensions. As part of their participation, Rocket Lab will also receive a $5 million task order to conduct a functional assessment.
Peter Beck, the company’s CEO, expressed pride in being selected for this important program, emphasizing Neutron’s performance and reliability. The Neutron rocket features advanced designs with carbon composites and innovative upper stages for complex satellite deployments, enhanced by reusable launch capabilities. Rocket Lab has established a solid track record since its inception in 2006, providing reliable launch services and contributing significantly to national security and scientific missions.
