A small cruise ship operated by Blue Lagoon Cruises collided with a coral reef near Monuriki Island in Fiji, the filming location for the Tom Hanks movie “Cast Away.” The accident occurred on April 4 during poor weather conditions when a squall reportedly dragged the vessel’s anchor. With around 30 passengers and 30 crew members on board, the cruise line initiated an emergency evacuation. All guests disembarked safely, and no injuries were reported. They were returned to Port Denarau, where accommodations and activities were arranged for them.
Monuriki Island, known for its white sand beaches and dense tropical vegetation, remains undeveloped and is a popular destination for day trips. This incident adds to a series of recent maritime accidents involving coral reef strandings, highlighting ongoing safety concerns in such remote areas.
