LaGuardia Airport is experiencing significant disruptions following a fatal collision between an Air Canada flight and a Port Authority vehicle late Sunday night. The crash resulted in the deaths of the two pilots of Air Canada Flight 8646, which was flying from Montreal and carried 72 passengers and 4 crew members. Many individuals onboard and two crew members in the Port Authority vehicle were injured, with some hospitalized but later discharged.
Investigations led by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), headed by Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy, are ongoing. The extensive scene is complicated by substantial debris and hazardous materials. Key evidence, including cockpit voice and flight data recorders, has been recovered for analysis. Investigators will assess various factors, like flight procedures and system controls.
The airport reopened shortly after the incident, but travel disruptions were exacerbated by lengthy TSA security lines due to a partial federal government shutdown affecting agency staffing. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and other officials stressed the importance of a comprehensive investigation, which may take months to yield results. The NTSB emphasized that it would only release verified information after thorough analysis. This incident marks LaGuardia’s first fatal crash in 34 years.
