New York City is recovering from a major flood caused by a storm that brought record rainfall. Central Park experienced its highest recorded rainfall in over a century, with 1.83 inches, while LaGuardia and Newark airports also shattered previous records. At least two fatalities have been reported due to flooding, and the storm caused extensive disruption at airports and public transport systems.
Friday is considered a first warning weather day, with a wind advisory predicting gusts of 45 to 50 mph. The storm saw over 3 inches of rain in some areas, with parts of Connecticut receiving as much as 3.90 inches. Maximum wind gusts reached 57 mph, impacting various locations across the tri-state area.
Looking ahead, Halloween is expected to be dry but breezy, while conditions for the New York City Marathon this weekend are predicted to be milder. The city’s Department of Environmental Protection noted that the infrastructure struggles to cope with extreme weather events intensified by climate change, leading to flash floods. Efforts are ongoing to clean catch basins to prevent future flooding issues.
