Federal agents detained four U.S. citizens during an ICE operation in South Shore, Chicago, triggering alarm over the treatment of children. Reports indicate children were held until arrangements could be made for their parents. Governor JB Pritzker condemned the operation, highlighting distressing scenarios where children were separated from families in the middle of the night. He noted that if abuse allegations arise against federal agents, the state’s Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) would take action to ensure children’s safety.
This incident, which occurred during the “Midway Blitz,” involved about 300 federal agents and aimed to arrest individuals connected to the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. Residents expressed concerns about the methods used, describing agents forcibly entering homes and leaving chaos behind. Some neighbors reported belongings being stolen during the raid.
The South Shore area has seen an influx of Venezuelan migrants recently, raising further community tensions around these federal operations.
