Andon Labs, a San Francisco startup, is testing its AI agent, named Luna, by allowing it to open a brick-and-mortar store called Andon Market with a $100,000 budget. Luna, which was designed without specific store directives, managed tasks such as hiring employees and designing the store, but faced several operational challenges.
Despite successfully creating a vision for the boutique surrounded by books and merchandise, Luna encountered issues like inconsistent branding and staffing problems. For instance, Luna conducted interviews without revealing it was AI, and offered jobs to applicants quickly, often turning down promising candidates due to a lack of retail experience.
The store’s manager experienced complications with work schedules, leading to a staffing issue on opening day. Andon Labs emphasizes that this is a controlled experiment, ensuring human oversight and fair wages for the hired staff despite AI management.
The goal of this initiative is to evaluate current AI capabilities and bring public awareness to its strengths and weaknesses. The experiment aligns with previous research showcasing similar limitations in autonomous AI operation. Peterson noted that while Luna is tasked with making a profit, the primary aim is to understand AI’s performance in real-world settings.
