Desi Freeman, a fugitive suspected of shooting two police officers in Porepanka, was killed by police after a seven-month manhunt in rural Victoria. The police confirmed his death following a standoff at a property in Torogorong, where Freeman allegedly pointed a firearm at officers, prompting them to open fire. Although not formally identified, police believe the deceased is Freeman, and they are investigating the assistance he may have received during his time on the run.
The manhunt began after Freeman, armed and described as dangerous, shot Constable Neil Thompson and Senator Constable Vadim de Waard during a raid on August 26, 2025. The incident led to a large-scale search operation, prompting a $1 million reward for information leading to his capture.
Victoria Police Commissioner Mike Bush noted that the families of the slain officers were informed first about Freeman’s death, which he stated could provide some closure to them. However, he acknowledged the tragedy of the situation, emphasizing that the incident casts a long shadow over the community.
Bush commented on the extensive resources dedicated to the search, involving officers from multiple states and territories. He also conveyed that the investigation would continue to ascertain the circumstances surrounding Freeman’s time in hiding and whether he had any accomplices.
Authorities described Freeman as being associated with the “Sovereign Citizens” movement, having fled into the bush after the shooting. Premier Jacinta Allan called him “an evil man,” while police association representatives acknowledged the ongoing trauma from the incident, though they viewed Freeman’s death as a step forward for the community.
