The Padres announced their opening day roster, with a notable development being starting pitcher Yu Darvish placed on the restricted list after having elbow surgery last November. Darvish is expected to spend the entire 2026 season on the 60-day disabled list. Players on the restricted list do not count toward the 40-man roster and may not be paid, although it’s unclear how this will affect Darvish’s $15 million salary.
Discussions about potentially voiding Darvish’s contract have been ongoing, as it runs through 2028 with $43 million guaranteed. In 2024, he voluntarily spent time on the restricted list due to family issues, choosing not to collect nearly $4 million in salary during that period.
The Padres also added seven players to injured reserve, including infielder Son Sung-moon and Will Wagner due to oblique injuries, and several pitchers recovering from various surgeries. Jason Adam, a potential Opening Day roster player, was placed on injured reserve to give him more time to recover, allowing the team to include rookies Bradley Rodriguez and non-option player Ron Marinacio in the lineup.
