Phillies manager Rob Thomson announced the team’s rotation for the season, with Christopher Sanchez as the opening day starter, followed by Aaron Nola, Jesus Luzardo, Taijuan Walker, and Andrew Painter. Painter, on the 40-man roster, is set to make his MLB debut in the fifth game, despite an elbow issue that led to Tommy John surgery last year.
Zack Wheeler is starting the season on injured reserve due to recovery from thoracic outlet syndrome, making the initial rotation as expected. Although Painter’s performance has declined since being a top prospect—posting a 5.40 ERA in Triple-A and a lower strikeout rate—he still shows potential at 22 years old.
As Wheeler works toward recovery, the Phillies may adjust their rotation. If Painter performs better than Walker, he could secure a permanent spot. Additionally, Painter’s presence on the Opening Day roster gives the Phillies a chance for future draft pick incentives based on his performance.
