Auburn’s Stephen Pearl addressed the media following a 72-62 loss to Tennessee in the SEC Tournament. He highlighted the team’s strong first-half defensive effort, including limiting Tennessee to just five shots and grabbing 16 offensive rebounds. However, he noted that Auburn struggled in the second half, allowing 27 free throws and committing 12 turnovers, which contributed to Tennessee’s offensive momentum.

Player Tahad Pettiford emphasized that the team’s defense impacted their offense, leading to careless turnovers and missed opportunities. He is optimistic about the team’s chances for an NCAA Tournament selection, citing their hard work and readiness.

Pearl expressed pride in his players despite the loss and discussed the challenges faced, including physicality from Tennessee and execution errors. He advocated for Auburn’s inclusion in the NCAA Tournament, citing strong metrics and a tough schedule that demonstrate the team’s capabilities.

Overall, the team is now in a waiting period before the Selection Sunday, and Pearl plans to analyze the game’s footage to prepare for their next steps. He reflected on the competitive nature of coaching, acknowledging respect for Tennessee’s Rick Barnes and expressing confidence in his players’ potential for tournament success.
