A drone attack in western Sudan’s Adikon market has killed 11 and injured dozens, amid a rapid escalation in air strikes in the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The United Nations reported over 200 civilian casualties from drone attacks in just over a week. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) treated over 20 injured individuals, including children, from the latest attack.
The use of drones has become prevalent on both sides since the war began in April 2023. UN human rights chief Volker Turk expressed alarm over the increasing frequency of civilian-targeted air attacks. Key incidents in the Kordofan region included significant casualties from strikes on markets and a hospital, demonstrating a disturbing trend towards targeting populated areas.
Experts have noted that the RSF’s use of drones reflects a shift in warfare tactics, with drones offering a cost-effective means to inflict terror, often targeting hospitals and markets. The conflict has sparked what the UN calls the world’s greatest humanitarian emergency, with approximately 33.7 million people in need of assistance and over 12 million displaced.
